Anthurium Lady Jane
Anthuriums are a group of several hundred species related to the arum lilies. They grow wild in the tropical rain forests of Central and South America.
The exotic flowers, with their large waxy “palettes” and coloured “tails”, have given rise to most of the common names, as well as to the word “Anthurium”, which is derived from the Greek “anthos”, a flower and “oura”, a tail. The link with flamingos is rather more tenuous, referring as it does to the “curved neck” and appearance of the spadix.
The color and shape of the spathe prompted the famous cleric Martin Luther to use the flower on his family’s coat of arms, to symbolise the heart.
