A Concierge in our Portland branch, Bonnie’s passion for plants and willingness to go above and beyond for her customers and fellow employees has made her a true asset to Ambius.
Her hard work paid off this year when she was awarded the Ambius North America Concierge of the Year Award.
“I try to educate people as much as I can,” said Bonnie when asked about her approach to her job. “People spend so much time at their workplace and Ambius brings plants to people so that they can have a little bit more enjoyment in the place where they spend a third of their lives.”
“Plants are alive. People care about their plants and when they are not looking healthy, it’s upsetting to them. It’s nice that I’m there for them to call and help them. I’m passionate about creating relationships with people and educating them on what plants offer. I think there’s so much room for learning about how plants clean the air, affect the way you feel and improve your health.” – Bonnie Smith
As a Concierge, Bonnie works with the Portland branch’s largest customers to make sure they are happy and that their plants are always looking their best.
Cody James H. Pace, Regional Line of Business Manager in Portland, described his experience working with Bonnie saying, “She’s really passionate about indoor plants in the work environment and how they can enhance people’s productivity and lives. Her passion for plants is infectious with her customers and colleagues. She really cares about what she’s doing and knows her stuff.”
The love of plants was instilled in Bonnie at a young age by her father. She wasn’t fond of watering the garden at the time, but later in life rediscovered her love of all things green and growing.
“My dad was really into plants growing up. He had a big greenhouse and garden,” said Bonnie when asked about how she first got into plants. “We were all required to take care of the plants. So when I was weeding, I always told myself that I’m not going to do this when I grow up. But, it’s definitely in my blood and I learned a lot about plants from my dad.”
Before Bonnie worked for Ambius, she was a buyer for a large garden center, where she was teaching classes about plants and studying to be a horticultural therapist (a professional who works in hospitals and prisons to create healing gardens). So when she came to Ambius, she was excited because there was so much opportunity to teach others about the value of plants.
In regards to the award, Bonnie credits the entire branch as the reason for the honor. “Everyone in the branch works well together. If there’s ever a project that needs to be done, everybody just jumps on it. We recently had a major hotel on the waterfront in the area request some plants and our team was ready and willing to deliver the plants on a Saturday morning.”
Bonnie is truly committed to doing whatever it takes for her customers. An example of Bonnie’s commitment to customer service excellence, a dog-friendly hotel customer was having a party for people in the area to bring their dogs. The customer reached out to Bonnie because she needed help creating a “Puppy Pee Pad” where the dogs could relieve themselves.
While that’s certainly not a service Ambius traditionally provides, Bonnie took on the challenge and made sure her customer had a perfect party for dogs and people alike. “It’s the little things like that which will earn your customer’s loyalty. It makes them feel confident that they can go to you when need services we provide like plants, scenting or holiday decorating.”
In addition to receiving the award, Bonnie will later this year be attending the company’s annual President’s Club event honoring colleagues from across North America. Congratulations to Bonnie all the other award winners and thanks for making Ambius the Experts in Interior Landscaping.
