How can you harness the beauty and power of nature in your interior without taking up precious floor space? Living green walls are the answer.
Grown vertically using hydroponics, living green walls are panels of plants that can be installed either on the interior or exterior of a property.
Vertical gardens big and small are bringing walls to life in all types of buildings. One business in Calgary, Alberta embraced the vertical gardening revolution and added a beautiful green wall that greeted guests to their facility with lush greenery.
Trico Centre (formally known as the Family Leisure Centre) has been serving Calgary’s South communities for over 33 years. Over the years, the non-profit charitable organization has evolved into an exceptional facility that promotes a healthy lifestyle and offers the community affordable and innovative programs.
The Trico Centre converted a 13,000 square foot curling rink into a large, clean and serviceable fitness centre which includes a track and beautiful skylights that warm up the large space.
“In 2013, we met with Ambius and came up with a plan to bring more nature into our facility, so we added five large potted trees. This was a big hit with our members!
Next, we wanted to add a splash of color to further create a more holistic charm to the space. We wanted to do something unique that would not necessarily be seen in a local community centre, so we decided to explore the option of a living wall. As a non-profit facility, funds are limited so we worked with Ambius to create the design within our budget.” – Michelle Mariani, Fitness Director, Trico Centre
With the customer’s vision and budget in mind, Ambius Calgary recommended the LivePanel green wall system. Due to its lightweight design and slim profile, LivePanel systems beautifully display plants without taking up much space. Furthermore, the 100% water efficient system was in line with the Trico Centre’s commitment to environment.
The Ambius and Trico Centre agreed to surround the twin LivePanel green walls with photo features that perfectly compliment the plants and capture the spirit of the space.
The great thing about a living wall it that it is changeable and can allow for new plant replacements and additions to fit the season. We also love the fact that we don’t have to maintain the plants; Ambius comes in weekly to give them the attention they need.
Once installed, it has become a focal point in the fitness centre. Members love the display and can’t believe it is real. It is unique, refreshing and beautiful and adds real warmth to the facility. – Michelle Mariani, Fitness Director, Trico Centre
