As Halloween draws closer, we look for things that will scare us down to our very bones. Traditionally, the thought of a friendly office plant wouldn’t do the trick, but these movies might just change your mind. We consulted the horror movie experts in the office and developed a list that encompasses the scariest plant movies out there. Grab the popcorn because these films are must-sees for the Halloween season.
1. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
This remake of the 1956 classic tells the tale of spores from another planet traveling to Earth where they take up residence and develop on the leaves of earthly plants. The characters soon discover these spores and their corresponding pods are transforming people into duplicates of themselves, but void of any emotion. The “pod people” quickly turn on the “Type-H” humans and chaos ensues.
2. The Thing From Another World (1951)
After the discovery of a mysterious aircraft at the North Pole, a recovery team is quickly assembled to explore further. The recovery team uses bombs to unearth the frozen aircraft and a block of ice encasing what appears to be the pilot becomes the team’s new focus. The frozen creature soon escapes and scientists discover that it is actually made of plant matter. No one is safe with the evil plant creature on the loose, so the recovery team must find a way to stop it before it kills everyone.
3. Little Shop of Horrors (1986)
Seymour Krelborn, an orphan working at a flower shop in Skid Row, finds a mysterious plant and names it after his crush. The plant begins to grow and begins to sing. In its songs, it requests blood, and soon Seymour cannot satisfy it with drops from his own finger. He must find another way to feed the plant.
4. Day of the Triffids (1963)
An unusually bright meteor shower blinds a majority of Earth’s population and brings along with it aggressive plant creatures. These plants from outer space have deadly “stingers” and manage to conquer most of planet Earth, sending humans on the run for survival until they discover a way to fight back!
5. The Ruins (2008)
A deadly, ancient plant, traps young hikers on top of an Aztec pyramid. The plants create hallucinations that lead to truly terrifying and disturbing results for the heroes. Not for the faint of heart!
6. Creepshow (1982)
This horror anthology from director George A. Romero and horror master Stephen King includes the tale of The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill starring King himself as Verrill. When a meteor crashes on this hapless man’s property and he touches it, he slowly turns into a hideous plant person.
7. Swamp Thing (1982)
A movie combining both the superhero and horror genre. A scientist’s lab is attacked by gunmen, causing chemicals to splash on him and he dives into the swamp to save himself. He emerges as Swamp Thing, a living plant-being, that seeks to find revenge against those who changed him and hopefully find a way to become human again. Based on the hugely influential DC comics series.
