The Howard Peter Rawlings

We were privileged to be contracted for the renovation and new construction of the Howard P. Rawlings Conservatory. The 1888 palm house was updated and it was our responsibility to install a new collection of plants. Refurbishing of the facility ensures the longevity of the plant collections for future generations visiting the conservatory.

In addition to the palm house, we had the responsibility of installing of the newly constructed Mediterranean House, Orchid House, Desert House, and Tropical House. Though this was a typical installation each house had its own challenges.

With the historic aspect of the Palm house and the surrounding grounds, very little modern equipment was used for the installation of the large plant material. An exceptional installation was accomplished by the crew using brute strength with a feather touch to install specimen palms, trees, and ground plant material.

In the desert house Ambius had to fulfill the design aspect of the conservatory by installing boulders that weighed in excess of 1/2 ton or more. Our installation crew used pry bars, gantry’s, and will-power to maneuver these large boulders into position atop concrete piers.
