Five of the most popular indoor plants
Anyone who works in an office knows that the appearance of your workspace can get pretty drab if you don’t do something to spruce it up. Don’t fear – Matt Kostelnick, Senior Horticulturist at Ambius, identified for us five of the most popular indoor plants, so you can feel confident picking any one of these plants that best meets your needs.
The plants below thrive in indoor lighting and do not need to be located in a window. Plus, they’re not too difficult to care for. Add any one of these plants to your interior and you’re well on your way to turning your space into a better place to work and live. The first popular indoor plant on our list has leaves that can appear in shapes such as hearts. Philodendrons are inclined to like a humid environment indoors, but if your interior is not humid, you can put the plants on a tray that contains slightly wet pebbles. In winter, your compost should be moist but not saturated with water. When it’s not winter, water philodendrons on a regular basis. Aim for between 65°F and 85°F in temperature.
One type of philodendron that works well indoors is the heartleaf philodendron. Indirect light is good for these plants and it’s not too difficult to care for them. Putting heartleaf philodendron plants on shelves or tables can allow vines to extend themselves. One note: Make sure you do not put these plants into direct sunlight.
Dracaena plants are taller – so they’re a nice fit for the floor, unlike the others on this list. For example, you might opt for Dracaena fragrans ‘Massangeana’, which has leaves with one yellow stripe. Dracaena deremensis ‘Janet Craig’ has leaves that are wide and deep green. Make an effort to put dracaena plants in humidity. And just remember to not over-water them.
Also known as the “dragon tree”, Dracaena marginata has dark green leaves with red stripes, which is where it gets its name. It’s another plant that could really benefit your office. Ensure your soil can drain well but also retains moisture, and aim for light that’s moderately bright. Additionally, try to keep temperatures between 75 and 90°F.
This plant also goes by “Devil’s Ivy.” Pothos leaves are typically shaped like hearts. The leaves are about three inches across on average but can have a diameter of up to 12 inches. The golden pothos is the most common kind. During winter, do not water pothos more than once per week but you can water it a little more frequently during the summer. Temperatures can be from 65°F to 80°F.
Golden pothos, neon pothos
A golden pothos plant is bound to make a great addition to your desk in the office. Its leaves are green in appearance and peppered with yellow. It is capable of handling low light; however, it favors medium light. Neon pothos is bright and chartreuse green in color, and it is sure to add brightness to your workplace.
Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily)
Certain spathiphyllum varieties can be just four inches tall but other types can be 10 feet tall. This plant typically has white flowers; blooming commonly begins between February and April and peak bloom time is from around April to September. Spathiphyllums prefer moist soil, so they will wilt if you let the soil become dry. Try to keep temperatures from 65°F to 75°F.
In particular, the flowers of spathiphyllum wallisii could add a little beauty to your space. Be sure to give the plant a little shade during the summer yet more light during the winter.
This is a sturdy plant that you don’t need to water too often (actually, you should let the soil dry out before you water it again). So, if you have trouble remembering to water, consider this plant. You have likely seen Sansevieria trifasciata ‘Laurentii’ – its leaves look a little like swords and have golden edges. If you choose a sansevieria plant, do not put it in temperatures lower than 50°F inside. Try to keep inside temperature between 65°F and 85°F.
