At Ambius, we believe in the power of plants. We know they can transform spaces, improve well-being, and even tell stories. That's why we're incredibly proud to look back on a very special partnership we’ve embarked on with Anne Frank Center USA.

We are honored to partner with Anne Frank Center USA to transport historic sapling trees descended from the original horse chestnut tree that stood outside Anne Frank's hiding place in Amsterdam. These aren't just any trees; they're living links to history, symbols of hope, and reminders of resilience. Today, on International Day of Peace, we honor Anne Frank's legacy with a look back on the transportation, plantings, education and community surrounding these sapling trees.

A Tree of Hope

Anne Frank wrote about this very chestnut tree in her diary, describing its beauty and the solace it brought her during a time of immense fear and uncertainty. In her words, "Our chestnut tree is in full bloom. It's covered with leaves and is even more beautiful than last year." This tree was a window to the outside world for Anne Frank, a connection to nature, and a source of comfort.

Sadly, the original tree toppled in a windstorm in 2010, but the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam had the foresight to gather and germinate chestnuts, preserving its legacy. Now, these saplings are being shared with organizations across the United States, and Ambius is honored to have a role in supporting their journey.

Ambius’ Role: Ensuring Safe Passage

Transporting these delicate saplings requires specialized care. They need temperature-controlled conditions and careful monitoring to ensure their safe arrival. At Ambius, we have the expertise and experience to handle this with the utmost care.  That’s where Ambius experts known for their extensive experience in tree and plantscape logistics joined the scene to provide the care and expertise needed for transport. Dedicated to ensuring these trees not only survive the journey but thrive in their new homes.

They joined in partnership with the experts at Vallonia Nursery to begin the journey. The experts at the nursery were the steward of these precious saplings, providing the ideal conditions and care to ensure the saplings were strong and healthy enough for their transport and new environment. This collaboration between the Vallonia Nursery and Ambius was about more than just moving trees; it’s about a shared commitment to a living tribute.

More Than Just Plants

Ambius Ft Lauderdale colleagues

This project is more than just transporting trees. It's about preserving history, honoring Anne Frank's memory, and spreading a message of hope. It's about environmental stewardship, community engagement, and using our expertise to make a difference.

As Lorri MacHarg, Managing Director of Ambius USA, said, "Ensuring the safe transport of these historic saplings is a responsibility we take seriously. Our team is committed to providing the specialized care and attention needed to deliver them to their final destinations."

The saplings are becoming living memorials and educational tools at educational facilities across the country. They serve as a reminder of Anne Frank's story, the horrors of the Holocaust, the importance of tolerance and understanding, and preserving a legacy of hope. The living symbols of hope were transported to four dedication sites at schools and education facilities across the United States, including:

  • National Catholic Center for Holocaust Education at Seton Hill University (Greensburg, PA)
  • Fairmont Junior / Senior High School (Fairmont, MN)
  • Stockton University (Stockton, NJ)
  • Carla Olman Peperzak Middle School (Spokane, WA)
