How do scents affect your mood?

With each new season comes distinctive scents. Summer brings smells of fresh-cut grass, blossoming flowers and the ocean breeze. Your sense of smell actually sharpens in spring and summer with the air full of extra moisture. You likely know from experience that the way a space smells can affect your mood. Obviously, if you’re in a place that has a disagreeable smell, you are more likely to be in a bad mood.

Conversely, if you walk into a room that features a pleasant smell, you are more likely to be in a good mood. However, your sense of smell influences your moods much more than you may know. Smell is the most sensitive of the senses. As infants, smell is the first sense to develop. Our noses have as many as six million odor-detecting cells.

Scent as a branding tool

In recent years, businesses have begun to wake up to the true power of scent. Major brands are now investing in the way their properties smell due to scent’s effect on the customer experience. Hotels have begun to craft signature scents that guests enjoy as they walk through the lobby. Retailers have used scent marketing tactics to keep customers in their stores longer, therefore increasing the likelihood that those customers make purchases. Whether you’re aware of it or not, your sense of smell is affecting the way you view brands and the purchase decisions you make.

Scent and relaxation

A study by International Flavors and Fragrances Inc. (IFF) found that certain aromas were able to affect mood by eliciting a muscle-relaxing effect. IFF then created a database that analyzed how fragrances around the world affected moods. One of the most interesting findings produced by the study was the way specific scents have the ability to reduce stress in individuals. It found that EMG stress response in the shoulder area of participants was significantly reduced when introduced to certain fragrances. Stress is something that affects all people. Regardless of your age, you likely feel stress on a daily basis. Thanks to research such as the IFF study, we know that scent can be leveraged to put all of us at ease.

Ambius scenting systems

What business wouldn’t want their customers to be less stressed and more relaxed when shopping in their stores? Scenting systems release vapors into the air that diffuse the fragrance throughout the space without leaving wet deposits behind. The aerosol contains a very small quantity of active ingredients which enables businesses to choose a specific scent that aligns with the brand. One scenting system can scent a space as large as 20,000 cubic feet.
