1. Kalanchoe plant
The tropical Kalanchoe plant is native to Madagascar and Africa. With over 100 species, the Kalanchoe, a flowering plant, is known for its aesthetically pleasing foliage and long-lasting colorful blooms, ranging from vivid yellows to bright pinks. Whatever the color, there is sure to be a Kalanchoe plant to compliment your decor needs.
Light: bright natural light, avoid direct sunlight. Without the right amount of light, the Kalanchoe’s flowers tend to not open up and its foliage becomes spindly.
Water: Kalanchoes need to be well-drained when watered and soil should be almost completely dry before watering again. This may mean watering every two weeks depending on temperature, lighting, and pot size.
Temperature: The ideal temperature for the Kalanchoe plant is 50-70°F during the daytime and 45-65°F at night.
2. Begonia plant
This flowering plant is extremely diverse in size, shape and color among its species. Not only do they have colorful blooms at the top of the stems, but they also have colorful leaves, making them shockingly beautiful to look at. Their blooms can look like traditional flowers, canes, tubes and other shapes. Coming in pinks, reds, yellows, white, and more, Begonias add a nice pop of color to a room with just the right amount of elegance.
Light: The amount of light that a begonia needs varies across the different species and hybrids. Typically, natural, bright, indirect light is sufficient for this popular flowering plant.
Water: Let the plant’s soil dry out before watering again. Do not let the plant sit in a saucer full of water.
Temperature: Begonias prefer a warm environment. They will not do well in temperatures under 55°F. Keep this plant in a room with temperatures between 62-72°F.
3. Azalea plant
This flowering shrub comes all the way from Asia and is known all over the world for its vibrant purple, red and pink flowers. In nature, Azaleas can be found growing underneath the shade of pear trees. Known as “The Royalty of the Garden,” these sophisticated plants are also able to thrive indoors as well if taken care of properly.
Light: Unlike the previously mentioned plants, Azaleas prefer cooler, partially shaded areas. It is important to keep them in an area that will not expose them to direct sun for long periods of time to prevent damage to the plant’s flowers.
Water: Avoid letting this plant dry out completely. Watering the top of the plant is sufficient but the Azalea also can benefit from the occasional full submersion in a container of water, letting the water drain out thoroughly afterward.
Temperature: Indoors, Azaleas do well in temperatures of 60-65°F. Cool temperatures also help their blooms last for a longer period of time.
4. Moth Orchid
The most popular of the orchid genus, the Moth Orchid, scientifically called Phalaenopsis, can be found in almost any store that sells plants. In nature, this orchid can be found in tropical settings all over the world, bringing a summery element to your interior even in the coldest of seasons.
Light: Moth orchids love bright, indirect sunlight. Without the right amount of light, orchid leaves become dark green and stiff. Too much direct light can cause stress to the plant.
Water: Moth orchids need to be fully saturated when watered, making sure the water slowly flows through the pot. Rewater these plants every 7-10 days.
Temperature: Moth orchids do well at “normal” room temperature. Anything below 60 °F is too chilly for these plants.
5. Chrysanthemum
Endearingly nicknamed “Mums,” this flowering plant exists in a carnival of colors ranging from blue to pink. These ancient plants have been used to decorate homes for centuries, but they can have a place in any floral display. They can add a pop of color to a simple, neutral themed space. Their durable nature makes them the perfect flowering plant for many environments.
Light: Mums require medium to bright light, but avoiding direct sunlight will help blooms last longer.
Water: Due to their shallow root system, mums need to be watered more frequently than other plants. It is best to keep the soil of this plant damp at all times.
Temperature: To preserve the mum’s flowers, keep room temperatures at an average of 60-70°F.
