2018 Pantone Color of the Year: Ultra Violet
“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”
– Leatrice Eiseman (Executive Director of The Pantone Color Institute)
The notion of inspiring connectivity, creativity, and transformation that stands behind the selection of this year’s Pantone Color of the Year, Ultra Violet, is one that guides our work at Ambius as well. Ultra Violet encourages the pushing of boundaries, and as 2018 brings about a fresh start, there is no better time to do so.
The dynamic color of Ultra Violet could easily be the forefront of an interior landscape or simply an accent piece. But no matter how it fits into your space, it is sure to please.
The Pantone Color Institute created eight color palettes to help guide and inspire design using Ultra Violet. A versatile color, Ultra Violet fits into each of the eight different palettes differently. The diversity in palettes encompasses a broad spectrum of “color stories” and the feelings they invoke.
The Purple Haze Palette is full of muted tones to invoke an effortless calm.
The Kindred Spirits Palette might just remind you of Valentine’s Day. It’s collection of purples and pinks come from the same side of the color wheel to inspire playfulness and good humor.
The Drama Queen Palette is aptly named. The rich earth tones in this collection of colors incite drama that will keep things exciting.
The dusty jewel tones of the Intrigue Palette are strong, but understated, giving an aura of mystery or intrigue.
Like the Kindred Spirits Palette, the Quietude Palette might remind you of Valentine’s Day, but is much more subtle. The colors are more calm and soft, meant to inspire a sense of quiet calm.
The Attitude Palette packs a punch! The bright colors exude excitement and demand to be noticed. This palette is perfect for a “high voltage” environment.
The Desert Sunset Palette draws its inspiration from its namesake. Pairing this year’s Ultra Violet with warm reds and orange tones, this collection is dramatic but not over the top.
Last but not least is the Floral Fantasies Palette, one of the softest in the collection. Reminiscent of a spring garden, the palette helps to blur the lines between nature and the built environment.
Ultra Violet in Practice
Laura Burns-Lambert, Sensory Designer for Ambius, is excited about the color selection and its implications for this year’s designs. “I could see this used as a color pop in tech companies to encourage forward thinking and ingenuity – encouraging people to work together towards one goal,” says Burns-Lambert.
Because it is not your color chart, secondary-color type of purple, it elicits a magical feeling that is a natural fit for holiday decor. As a part of some of the more subtle palettes, Ultra Violet can be quite calming. In industry sectors such as healthcare and hospitality, a soothing, meditative state can be essential. Including this year’s color in design will aid in creating an environment that promotes wellness and the calm that many seek.
